Greetings from
Friends of Project Literacy
For 39 years, Project Literacy has helped adults learn to read, write and speak English.
Project Literacy’s learners, teachers and tutors are bright, committed and resilient. They’ve built a thriving and dynamic learning community based in Watertown. Please read on to learn
more about their stories and how you can support them.

Finding A Welcoming Connection
When Baidy Diaw moved to Watertown, he immediately felt at home with Project Literacy. “I really love the community because they are so helpful, and kind of remind me of where I come from.” With his busy schedule working in the restaurant industry and raising a family with young children, Baidy found that the flexibility of one-on-one tutoring with a volunteer was a great fit for him.

I think your team of teachers is exceptional...Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the attention and concern and humanity you show us.

Inspired to help support Project Literacy? Learn how.
From the Program Director
The past year and a half brought an onslaught of unexpected challenges, but even in uncertainty, our community showed remarkable resilience. Project Literacy’s services were steady and vital during this time. Many new learners expressed fear that if they could not communicate clearly in English, they would not be able to advocate for themselves or explain their innocence if confronted. Language for them is not just education,it is also their protection. Because of your generosity, we were able to respond.
Your donations allowed us to begin online beginner classes and tutoring at a critical moment. Changes in immigration policies and the closure of local shelters led to a decline in overall enrollment and a dip in attendance at in-person, beginner classes. With your support, we were able to provide free, high-quality curriculum, accessible books, and introduced an app that strengthened reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
